Collapsed department store chain Harris Scarfe has found a buyer in the Spotlight Group, but the future of its remaining stores and staff remains unclear

  • The owner of fabric chain Spotlight and outdoor brands Anaconda and Mountain Designs has signed a deal to buy Harris Scarfe
  • Receivers say they are hopeful all 44 remaining stores can stay open but it depends on negotiations in the next few weeks
  • Retailers including Colette, Jeanswest and Bardot have shut stores after entering administration

The 170-year-old retailer called in the administrators in December, just a month after it was acquired by private equity firm Allegro Funds.

The number of Harris Scarfe stores has been reduced from 66 to 44 in the months since, and job cuts reduced employee numbers from more than 1,800 to around 1,300.
